Market Data Sources: Which One is the Standard?

Currently, the market has hundreds of financial data providers both domestic and international, offering everything from basic analysis, technical analysis, adjusted price data, and more. Comparing data from different providers reveals certain differences depending on the type of data.

For example, a comparison of MWG’s data at 10:30 AM on August 6, 2020, from several of the largest and most reliable data portals is shown below:

Information such as PE, EPS, and Beta are not consistent across sources. Some of the reasons for these differences are:

  • Timing of data updates: Stock prices fluctuate every second, so whether updates are real-time or periodic can cause discrepancies.
  • Certain rights information may not yet be updated, causing stock prices to be unadjusted in time.
  • Financial reports from listed companies are released at various times, so updates may not be timely.
  • Each provider may use different input sources to calculate metrics; for example, using raw prices versus adjusted prices will yield different results.
  • Historical prices accumulated from the early days of the market, corporate actions like stock splits or rights issues, can make some historical data inaccurate, causing discrepancies in certain metrics.
  • Errors during data entry.

So, which data source is considered the standard? Essentially, current sources do not differ significantly and are sufficient for basic analysis and investment decisions. The question is not easy to answer, or in other words, there is no single “standard” data source. Investors can consult multiple sources or choose providers with transparent calculation methods and clear update policies for reliable data.
